The humor and the indictment of the warrior mentality win out. Michôd’s better instincts take over, many of the crude jokes land with force, and Pitt is hilarious in this mode.

This is not a typical "war" movie, it is actually an anti-war satire. Some people will get it, some people won't. and for those that don't...they probably won't like it. If you have a cynical view of the military or our country you will probably enjoy it, as it will make more sense to you. If...you don't get it...you are probably like the people being satirized.... Overall not a perfect film, as it goes from funny to a little philosophical as it goes on, but overall pretty entertaining, unique, and definitely worth seeing.

Critics have a habit of calling movies tonally inconsistent, but this should now be the textbook example, a film that veers wildly from war movie to character drama to satire to history piece to a blended gray of nothing.

In general, anti-war movies are greatly appreciated regardless of quality. The unwinnable wars in the Middle East deserve to be pilloried hard and often. The war in Afghanistan is shameful. America's politicians are a disgrace. But this movie doesn't do the job, mocking the military, rather the political leadership, who are the real villains. It's supposed to be satire but it comes across as buffoonery. Pitt's character is massively overexaggerated to the point of silliness. If they played it straight, they would have made a better point and still had dark comedy. Opportunity missed.

This was a gem a movie. I was surprised to learn that it was based on true military leaders in the war in Afghanistan. Witty and darkly humorous. Top flight cast of characters.
