Walking with the Enemy (2014)

Regent Horthy is the leader of Hungary and a German ally, but his favorable standing with Hitler changes as the war comes to an end. Forced to cede Hungary's power or else witness the execution of his son, Regent Horthy gives up control of his country to the Nazis, who quickly move Hungarians to ghettos and death camps, with no hope in sight. But the despair changes when a young man named Elek emerges. Separated from his family during the relocations and aided by the woman he loves , Elek defies the enemy by becoming one of them. In a race against time, disguised as a Nazi Officer he embarks on a mission to save his family and thousands of his countrymen.

Walking with the Enemy is a decent war movie that while enjoyable at times, doesn't do anything to break the mould.

As with many other WWII films, it takes genuinely stirring source material -- a young Hungarian man poses as a Nazi to find his dislocated family -- and reduces it to its most shopworn components.

The title "Walking With the Enemy" suggests a peculiar lack of urgency, so it's a disappointingly accurate handle indeed.

Inspired by a true story, this film follows a brave young man (Jonas Armstrong) who poses as a Nazi officer to save other Jews in Budapest. This well-constructed (if not somewhat formulaic) film depicts German cruelty and the bravery of those who stood up to them. It's attractively shot, well acted and directed with passion. Although the drama sometimes gets a bit heavy-handed, it remains an absorbing fim with a charismatic leading man. My minor beefs: everyone speaks with accents (in their own language!) and Armstrong always has a 5 o'clock shadow (which the Nazis would never tolerate).

You really can't go wrong with World War II-era movies. They just have so much emotional and real-life drama. It really makes you have so much respect for the people of that era, who basically saved the world by taking on Hitler and the Axis powers. I tip my hat to the veterans who served our country and won the war for our side. It reminds me of something I recently saw on the In View Series hosted by Larry King. The series has featured programming about military veterans lately. I'm thinking of this clip I saw about a retirement community for military veterans. "Walking with the Enemy" looks like a winner. I'll definitely try to catch it in theaters when it comes out. This seems like an original story that we haven't seen before. It would not surprise me if it gets consideration for awards.
