Suite Française (2015)

France, 1940. In the first days of occupation, beautiful Lucile Angellier is trapped in a stifled existence with her controlling mother-in-law as they both await news of her husband: a prisoner of war. Parisian refugees start to pour into their small town, soon followed by a regiment of German soldiers who take up residence in the villagers' own homes. Lucile initially tries to ignore Bruno von Falk, the handsome and refined German officer staying with them. But soon, a powerful love draws them together and leads them into the tragedy of war.

This movie engages the viewer from the beginning due to the great performances, the production design and the chemistry between Michelle Williams and Schoenaerts. [Full Review in Spanish]

It's very easy to be flippant with the material and lose sight of the context when a romantic narrative takes precedence - but the director never compromises on the severity of war.

So beautiful sweet love story BUT it is the saddest !

Dibb's tribute to the author is honourably meant. But his crude distortions do her novel a grave disservice.
