Suite Française (2015)

France, 1940. In the first days of occupation, beautiful Lucile Angellier is trapped in a stifled existence with her controlling mother-in-law as they both await news of her husband: a prisoner of war. Parisian refugees start to pour into their small town, soon followed by a regiment of German soldiers who take up residence in the villagers' own homes. Lucile initially tries to ignore Bruno von Falk, the handsome and refined German officer staying with them. But soon, a powerful love draws them together and leads them into the tragedy of war.

Vakkundig gemaakt oorlogsdrama waarin helaas de romance tussen de goede duitser en de franse vrouw wiens man soldaat is niet zo goed werkt als de bijna soapy ontwikkelingen in het dorp waar de duitsers zich vestigen.

It's not that Suite Française is boring, just predictable, a serviceable slice of wartime Nîmes-by-numbers, made interesting mostly because the director, Saul Dibb, has allowed Scott Thomas to unload her most formidable weapon: sourness.

Not the usual Weinstein Co fare which is consistently excellent. Historical inaccuracies include Bruno's brother having died at Normandy when the Normandy invasion was in 1944; the time frame for this movie is right after the capitulation of France in 1940.
