VIRGINIA benefits from a terrific ensemble performance and interesting direction from Dustin Lance Black. Yet, the script desperately needs editing and simplifying. It's overly long and the characters far too challenging to fully engage and sometimes are past comprehension. Even the most sympathetic characters are brittle in portrayal and too afflicted. However, the film bravely touches on subversive subject matter and displays a unique filmmaker that will hopefully be able to continue honing his voice.

The wonderful performance by Jennifer Connelly could not lift this depressing tale of mental illness and small-town politics.

It was definitely original, but although it was weird and never seen before it was a little too out there in some circumstances that made it less entertaining. It seems pretty simple starting with the huge mess with Connelly's character and the affair with Harris's character and then the fake pregnancy comes in and the robberies and things start on a path that is too hectic. Everything that could carry as a major storyline turn into just quick jumbled up messes that lead into one after the other. With a bit more structure and depth out of the original it could have proven a better and more interesting watch, but as the minutes added up the plot twisted itself into confusion.

Black loses control of Virginia as it lurches from political satire to unintended black comedy to mom-and-son melodrama. But the performances and the movie's sheer crazy audacity make it watchable.
