Writer-director Bellocchio is just as fascinated with the emotional temperature of Italy in the Mussolini years as he is with the travails of Ida Dalser at the hands of her beloved Il Duce.

Despite some excellent cinematography and acting suffers from the usual structural problems of biopics. Too long and loses focus.

Not a biopic, but a dramatization of the relationship of Mussolini with his first wife who he had committed to an asylum after his rise to power. Gorgeously photographed and featuring an excellent performance by Giovanna Mezzogiorno, this film is worth a look.
