It's Rebecca Hall that arguably deserves the greatest praise; she practically devours her role in a way she's rarely, if ever, been allowed to do on screen before.

Christine is a movie as bleak and withdrawn as its protagonist, with Hall making the most of her best role in years, a slow death spiral that's hard to look away from.

Anxiety, depression, fear, and hopelessness. These are all things Christine must live with every day. Anyone who suffers from these aliments will know how oppressive and tuff life is even without adding the extra stress of a cut throat work place world like broadcast news. As someone who does suffer from some of these things myself, I feel a very strong empathy for her. It breaks my heart to see her go through so much and know that her story is ultimately a doomed one. Depression is real and while not many people from the outside can see it, those live with it fight back and forth with it in every decision made and ever moment lived.

How far the story of Christine Chubbuck ripples outward, registering the cultural stresses of its time (and ours), I’m not sure. As an eyewitness report of a lonely soul on the rack, however, the movie is hard to beat.

It’s to Hall’s credit that, in the end, we see Chubbuck as a victim of no one so much as herself.
