Vexille (2007)

2067: Isolation: Japan seals herself off from the eyes of the world in the face of unilateral international policy setting strict limits on the use of robotic technology. The island nation exists only behind a veil of seclusion. No soul shall enter. No soul shall leave. 2077: Revelation: The veil is breached. Japan is infiltrated by agents of the organization S.W.O.R.D., a fighting force operating outside of the protection of the United States and her allies. Their mission: Determine if the Japanese are developing banned robotic bio-technology, forbidden due to its threat to humankind. Incredible animation in this one. More textured than Appleseed though I thought the designs in that film were more interesting than in Vexille. Surprisingly straightforward story, again as compared to Appleseed. The action is spread out but really exciting when it does happen. The robots were very cool (they don't get enough screentime, really) and the Jags were imaginative monsters, reminding me of the worms in Dune. I know that Vexille is the name of one of the lead characters but I don't understand why the movie would be named after her. Well-worth a viewing for anime scifi fans.

Fantastic story, incredible animation, rendering and effects. Nicely paced and produced with a soundtrack provided by Paul Oakenfold. Damn it's a good film ;-)
