While Olsen and Fanning are surely talented, such a cold screenplay -- one that feels hard to engage with -- ends up leaving the actresses little to work with.

Most disheartening is how the female leads aren't given ample space to develop as dynamic characters beyond the most urgent confines of the script's scenarios.

In the constant blandness with not much response, there's an unconventionally-driven drama being kept at minimally subtleness with few turns that still surprises and one understandable outburst after a blurry bit of eroticism and fluff within a coming-of-age procession, with the main appealing spotlight focusing on the two female leads and their chemistry. I found this film charming and with a good story and even better acting. It was fun and adventurous. Really worth checking out for sure!

The casting isn’t all together unconvincing: Olsen and Fanning’s collective ability to project intelligence beyond their years works both ways, allowing them to play both precocious youths and youthful adults. But Very Good Girls catches them in between those stages, and the effect isn’t evocative so much as muddled.
