Copying Beethoven (2006)

A fictionalised exploration of Beethoven's life in his final days working on his Ninth Symphony. It is 1824. Beethoven is racing to finish his new symphony. However, it has been years since his last success and he is plagued by deafness, loneliness and personal trauma. A copyist is urgently needed to help the composer. A fictional character is introduced in the form of a young conservatory student and aspiring composer named Anna Holtz. The mercurial Beethoven is skeptical that a woman might become involved in his masterpiece but slowly comes to trust in Anna's assistance and in the end becomes quite fond of her. By the time the piece is performed, her presence in his life is an absolute necessity. Her deep understanding of his work is such that she even corrects mistakes he has made, while her passionate personality opens a door into his private world.

Movie was a pleasant surprise. Thought Ed Harris portrayal of Beethoven was wonderful. Great period movie.

Absolutely Incredible. I think that Beethoven's [well, the actor haha] description of what [good] music is and what [good] musicians are used the most simple and profound terms that they could have hoped to use in that time period. And that's not far off from what we would say today. It also portrayed the suffering that musicians endure to create beauty excellently. And even while exploring the completeness of purpose in thier music-making, it still keeps you earthbound in a often less-than-pleasent reality. Also presents the idea of music as a living thing, which won't fit in "normal" structure. Often things are hard to understand because their ideas are taken from the extemes of human experience which most of us haven't experienced. Bravo!!

Although the storyline is not too strong, the film captures brilliantly the agony and the ecstasy of Beethoven's struggle to produce his masterwork and the (edited) performance of the 9th is one of the most moving experiences of my more than 50 years of being a movie fan! Expand

I couldn't disagree more with Nick B.'s assessment of Diane Kruger's acting. She approached her role with subtlety, not flatness. Yes, Harris portrays Beethoven as "over the top" and bombastic. He was that way in real life, an egotist. This film isn't about Beethoven, it's about how the times treated women, and shut them out of important pursuits. It's a feminist "what if" by a feminist director. It should be viewed for it's intent, not what we wish it were.

I really liked it, not only for the soundtrack, but for the interplay between Beethoven and his fictional muse.
