Venus Beauty Institute (1999)

Aging beautician Angèle, already wounded by a long-ago romance, gets awkwardly dumped at a train station. Witnessing how she turns around a humiliating situation, younger sculptor Antoine becomes so smitten that he breaks up with his fiancée and sets out to win Angèle's heart. Meanwhile, Angèle attempts to quash the budding romance of her young co-worker, Marie, and a much older widowed client, despite their obvious rapport.

The plot summary is incorrect. Nadine is the owner of the salon. AngÃ¨le is the main character. Nice recurring touches: the way AngÃ¨le disappears behind the bus, in fact the way buses passing in front of us introduce and remove characters; the chime that announces new customers, the eccentric patrons and the music. I loved the ending, the sex scene in the dark with AngÃ¨le and Antoine (the lighting hit just the right places-- hands groping for a banister, the muscles on Antoine's back. I also enjoyed the creepy scene between Marie and the widower -- it was actually my favorite in the movie--the way that redoubling works and little details like what's going on with Antoine's eyes during the scene. the characters are distinct, though I actually hate AngÃ¨le at the start. She sort of grows on you so that by the last scene, you are with her. I imagine Barbara Streisand doing the role in an English remake. Not sure about the other characters, though.

Light comedy, this is it. Nothing like Le Fabeleux Destin d'Amelie Poulain, if you are a Audrey Tatou fan. But just as simple and sweet.

Director Tonie Marshall's script is consistently absorbing, with a remarkable way of balancing wry and perceptive observations with the mundane.

This movie depicts the constant need that women have to stay not only young and beautiful but to stay in love. Watching this film made me remember why I 'heart' French movies.
