Valmont (1989)

Set in Baroque France, a scheming widow and her lover make a bet regarding the corruption of a recently married woman. The lover, Valmont, bets that he can seduce her, even though she is an honorable woman. If he wins, he can have his lover to do as he will. However, in the process of seducing the married woman, Valmont falls in love.

Milos Forman brought us Amadeus and Cuckoo's Nest but his version of this classic tale unfortunately falls short of Stephen Frears' Dangerous Liasons. It is the cast, however, that lacks the power ; Firth especially just doesn't cut it. Still you can't beat the source material.

in fact I hate Valmont, and I really don't understand why she want to ruin other's happiness and the clean mind. but from another angle, she is a smart woman, just have the wrong way. expressed the battle of people very deeply. not bad.

The third version of the story that was used in Cruel Intentions. The othermorewell received "Dangerous Liasions" was done a year before this one. I like this one the most. Two rich, shallow, snotty, but fun people who love fucking as many people as possible in the safe pre- AIDS era,make a bet that they can ruin some relationships and corrupt certain individuals for their own amusement but things get out of hand when love starts getting involved. I like the fact that our two villains don't take the typical approach that Cruel Intentions and Dangerous Liaisons actors did. They were far more layered,manipulative,charming, funny, and I found my self relating more to them, and wanting to hang out with them. The acting was fun, with slick directing and expensive and nice looking sets that just made me think of the word lush. The movie is the most grounded version, it feels genuine.

Les Liaisons Dangereuses (which the movie is based on, was one of the last books found in library of Marie Antoinette upon her death.
