Valerie and Her Week of Wonders (1970)

Valerie, a Czechoslovakian teenager living with her grandmother, is blossoming into womanhood, but that transformation proves secondary to the effects she experiences when she puts on a pair of magic earrings. Now seeing the world around her in a different light, Valerie must endure her sexual awakening while attempting to discern reality from fantasy as she encounters lecherous priest Gracian, a vampire-like stranger and otherworldly carnival folk.

Fascinante visualmente hablando, aunque bastante inconexa. Tal vez el haber sabido algo del folklore local me habria ayudado a no estar tan perdido... aun así me tuvo pegado todo el rato. Bastante pervertidilla. No soy pacato, pero me hizo sentir incomodo en mas de una ocasión... a veces me Shockeaba un poquito, Una estrella de bono por eso.

This movie has to have some of the most extraordinary imagery I've ever seen in a movie. One of the most interesting and peculiar movies I've ever seen in my life. I cannot really put into words what this movie is about other than it is bizarre, in the best way. Beautifully shot, this movie is filled with wonderful colors and haunting imagery. The topics covered in this movie are great but also disturbing. It touches on religion, sexuality, puberty, etc. The kids nowadays would go crazy over this movie given that there's animal cruelty and lesbianism. There's moments in this movie that I found hilarious that I know weren't meant to be funny. But I couldn't help myself. I like that even in an odd movie such as this one, I can still laugh. It's unlike anything you'll ever see. And it's something that you have to experience for yourself. The movie is Valerie and Her Week of Wonders.

A strange fantasy/nightmare about a young girl whose sexual awakening is being haunted by vampires, lesbians, lesbian vampires, incestuous vampires, incestuous non-vampires, and demented priests. Magic earrings are also involved. Some of the imagery is quite striking, and the music is haunting. The non-sequitur editing reminded me a great deal of Jires' Czech contemporary Vera Chytilova, who has a similar no-nonsense approach to nonsense. Fans of Jodorowsky will probably enjoy this, too.

Extremely awkward coming-of-age film that has only recently resurfaced in the United States within the last 10 years. Contains a whole ton of offensive material but yet it's not offensive because of the way it is done and portrayed. Most importantly, the entire film is basically a fantasy, so it didn't actually happen. You tend to forget this because you get so wrapped up in the film, the immersion factor is very high. But if you can step out of the dream world, some things just don't make any sense and at times, you're constantly questioning whether the characters are immortal of sorts. Anyway, extremely weird film with no real plot, but a lot of fun, this would be a very interesting film to own.
