Valerie, a Czechoslovakian teenager living with her grandmother, is blossoming into womanhood, but that transformation proves secondary to the effects she experiences when she puts on a pair of magic earrings. Now seeing the world around her in a different light, Valerie must endure her sexual awakening while attempting to discern reality from fantasy as she encounters lecherous priest Gracian, a vampire-like stranger and otherworldly carnival folk.

On the day she gets her period, a young girl's life turns into a strange dream of lusty priests and vampire infestations. This surreal fairy tale exploring juvenile fears of predatory adults and the scary world of sex was a late bloomer in the Czech New Wave, but stands as one of the most fascinating relics of the movement.

It should be called Valerie and her week of freudian horrors and it's all about growing up, becoming a woman and discovering the forbidden love. Afascinating visual gem from the 70's.

This is what life would be like if I was a girl on acid going through puberty...god bless Czech art house films. Still though, there is no denying it's a gorgeous piece.

A strange fantasy/nightmare about a young girl whose sexual awakening is being haunted by vampires, lesbians, lesbian vampires, incestuous vampires, incestuous non-vampires, and demented priests. Magic earrings are also involved. Some of the imagery is quite striking, and the music is haunting. The non-sequitur editing reminded me a great deal of Jires' Czech contemporary Vera Chytilova, who has a similar no-nonsense approach to nonsense. Fans of Jodorowsky will probably enjoy this, too.
