Valerie, a Czechoslovakian teenager living with her grandmother, is blossoming into womanhood, but that transformation proves secondary to the effects she experiences when she puts on a pair of magic earrings. Now seeing the world around her in a different light, Valerie must endure her sexual awakening while attempting to discern reality from fantasy as she encounters lecherous priest Gracian, a vampire-like stranger and otherworldly carnival folk.

What if all that vampire really wanted to do the whole movie was just go to the dentist?

Dreamy, surreal and haunting all seem adequate descriptions. Oh and very weird. This is from Czechoslovakia and is like Alice in Wonderland crossed with Dracula, the whole film seems to exist in a dream state and is so beautifully designed you should have at least half a dozen 'wow' moments. Great soundtrack too (Finders Keepers relased it on CD not too long ago).

Pubescent girls feeling each other up in country streams, possible brother-sister incest, the undead and a gorgeous soundtrack (which was recently released for the first time ever). Czechoslovakian craziness if I ever saw it.

A fairy tale that keeps getting derailed when consciousness of adulthood's scarier moments triggers a new wrinkle in the fabric of Valerie's dream. Sex and death stalk childhood, leaving the inner spirit (embodied by Valerie's magic earrings) to fend for itself in the tough process of coming to terms with ideas and phenomena that during youth did not -- really absolutely could not exist. The movie has an additional layer of interest as a product made under the shadow of the Soviets (honestly how this movie evaded the censors is a puzzle). Throw a bone to the Czech New-Wave and see this and 'Dasies' for an absolute trip.
