Three criminals plan to break out of prison the day before their release in order to carry out a daring jewel robbery, intending to establish the perfect alibi by returning to jail afterwards. First however they must get out, a task made more difficult by a new, stricter prison officer.

Early Peter Sellers movie. Like Hogan's Heros in prison.

This film is genius. A bunch of inmates in a prison that is run somewhat like a hotel are persuaded to pull off an outside heist by Wilfred Hyde-White. The perfect alibi. Unfortunately a new prison officer arrives, in the form of the brilliant Lionel Jeffries, who is not only horrified by the cushy set up but has really got it in for Peter Sellers and his gang. Sellers in his prime before he became, dare I say it, somewhat pretentious.

Peter Sellers is supreme in this film but the supporting cast of British stalwarts is excellent too. It is a film I return to again and again and it never fails to improve my mood.

One of my favourite movies of all time; classic Peter Sellers, superb performances all round and a genuinely entertaining Ealing Comedy.
