Before Paul Verhoeven sold out and started making tacky - though occasionally satirical - American films, he made films of a higher calibre in his native Holland, the best of which is the exuberant erotically charged Turks Fruit, starring Rutger Hauer (surely his best role) and sex goddess Moniique van de Van. One of the definitive films of 70s European cinema.

One of the best films ever made about doomed relationships. The film works so well because its lead characters are just 'children', we can never take their romance too seriously but at the same time completely buy the state they get themselves into. This is helped by Rutger Hauer and Monique Van De Ven's brilliant and fearless performances, always willing to go with Paul Verhoeven's liberal sensibilities, sexual obsessions and at times poor taste, but the film is all the better for it.

fucking awesome movie with an amazing soundtrack. everyone else summed it up, i could go on about how freaky foxy everyone is in this movie and how heartbreakingly sad it is. but the opening lines of the movie are "I want to lick the shit from your asshole". enuff said.
