I definitely found some connection to this story, likely because my own existence straddles the modern & independent Canadian lifestyle and my parents' traditional family-oriented Portuguese culture. The plot took a turn for the bizarrely melodramatic, but otherwise was an appropriately romantic experience of old world values.

If anyone has a problem with the homoerotic stereotyping that is associated with Turkish baths, this is not the film for you. This is the Brokeback Mountain of Turkish baths. But it's kind of interesting. The ending could have used a tad bit more explanation. Ebert ripped the acting apart, but what does that guy know about movies? I thought the leads were fine.
