Turk 182! (1985)

After New York City firefighter Terry Lynch is unable to receive any compensation for an injury incurred during the off-duty rescue of a young girl, he grows suicidal. Furious, his brother Jimmy attempts to have Mayor Tyler intervene, but the corrupt politician instead denounces Terry as a drunk. Determined to get justice, Jimmy begins a graffiti campaign of embarrassing slogans mocking the mayor, which soon captivates the city.

A movie with a sloppily sentimental heart that's as big as the city in which its story takes place.

When this came out I was still young enough to enjoy the nonsense of the idea. Fight the city by defacing it -but for a noble cause??! The tagging story bigins here, is that right?

Besides its compelling storyline, Turk 182! features outstanding performances across the board, with Hutton perfect in the role of the determined unassuming hero.

Film critic Jack Garner recently used this film to make a point. He said film titles made up of numbers are not memorable. While I think fans of 8 1/2 would disagree, I was intrigued enough by his description of Turk 182 to pick up a copy. To my surprise, it was directed by Bob Clark. Not a great movie, although you do root for the characters. The vandalism vigilante plot doesn't have many surprises, although it's amusing to watch through post-9/11 eyes. The inspiring stunts in the movie would enrage the public today -- just look at the uproar over the Aqua Teen Hunger Force in Boston. Kim Catrall was gorgeous, and it was interesting hearing Robert Urich and Tim Hutton do New York accents.
