It's an engrossing, uncanny and somewhat disturbing film, and completes something of a trio of historical melodramas after Barbara and his worldwide hit Phoenix, but develops the themes of those in an adventurous, if oblique, way.

Christian Petzold's progressive drift away from realism gathers pace in Transit, another melodrama of impossibility and despair that unfolds in a hyper-constructed amalgam of past and present as unstable as it is seamless.

This stylistic strategy works beautifully, heightening the unsettling unreality of Georg's life on the run and suggesting that this WWII-era story about immigrants fleeing oppression is relevant to the experience of immigrants right now.

Petzold continues to prove he knows how to craft a compelling story and conclude it with grace and ease. Suspense derives from character interaction and decision-making that may or may not be selfish but we understand the actions either way.

Be prepared to be challenged by the glittering, allusive and often bewitching "Transit," but also to be frustrated.
