Watch this and find out why European films were so far ahead of American films of the day. Complex, interesting -- and yes, melodramatic. Garbo is 19 here, and already has the star presence.

I can see that this movie has potential but to me, at first sight, looked chopped. Later I found out that the movie has been recently restored and I've seen a chopped version. And it is Greta Garbo's breakthrough movie. Now I have to see the restored version and give a proper rating.

The best film of Greta Garbo's swedish period and one of the greatest swedish films of all time.

Far too long but with some impressive set pieces. Early Garbo before Stiller and then MGM took her under their wing and molded her. She's about 15 pounds heavier than usual which obscures those signature cheekbones and her hair and make-up are awful but the spark is definitely there.

One of my favorites, featuring a young Greta Garbo and a dazzling performance by the Swedish stage legend, Gerda Lundequist. The entire film is evocative of 19th century Romanticist melodrama. The new score by Matti Bye is brilliant.
