Trancers (1984)

Angel City trooper Jack Deth is sent back in time from 2247 to 1985 L.A. to inhabit the body of his ancestor. Deth's assignment is to find his archenemy, Whistler, who turns people into zombies, before the fiend is able to kill all the ancestors of the future's governing council.

I can't decide which is the more craptastic Blade Runner knockoff; this or "Runaway" starring Tom Seleck and his mustache. And I'm also not sure what exactly it is that inspired so many sequels but I think there is something to be said about the swagger and conviction of Tim Thomerson's performance. Both he and Helen Hunt lend a certain lovable humanity to an otherwise ridiculous film, making this time capsule of all that was wrong with 80's sci-fi (and the 80's in general) seem almost bearable. Unlike similar futuristic action flicks, Trancers doesn't even bother going through the motions. It's so predictable and throwaway in nature that it almost laps itself and transforms into something unique...almost.

Future cop (Tim Thomerson, who is great in this) sent back in time to protect ancestors from time travelling criminal who exhibits mind control over people. Great premise, execution, humour, action. Exactly what a low budget film should strive to be.

Transfers has everything I want from a great B-movie; solid performances, practical effects that serve the story, and it's one hell of a fun ride! If you're a fan of 80s action sci-fi, give transfers a shot!

Trancers is a cool little Sci-Fi film that certainly can't stand with the big boys in terms of either special effects or scope, but its filmmakers know its limitations yet push the boundaries only as far as they will stretch, no more. It might be "quaint" today -- particularly in terms of its effectively limited visual effects and noticeably small scale -- but this remains a well-written, nicely paced, smartly acted, and keenly directed film that withstands the test of time on the merits that make it work.

Pure 80s sci-fi low budget cheese. This played daily on HBO when i was a kid. Co-starring an incredibly adorable pre oscar winning Helen Hunt. A highly recommended guilty pleasure of mine.
