Trancers (1984)

Angel City trooper Jack Deth is sent back in time from 2247 to 1985 L.A. to inhabit the body of his ancestor. Deth's assignment is to find his archenemy, Whistler, who turns people into zombies, before the fiend is able to kill all the ancestors of the future's governing council.

Another one of my favorite movies growing up, Trancers introduced me to the cop from the future without peer, Jack Deth. Tim Thomerson's portrayal is pure tongue-in-cheek fun; and everything about this film is pure B movie gold. Helen Hunt is in here too, but she doesn't return for the sequels I don't think. If you're a fan of low-budget camp sci-fi or B movies in general and haven't seen Trancers, shoot it to the top of your queue pronto. You'll be thanking me later. Also, check out 2 and 3, which are equally entertaining. 4 and 5 are less so, and were shot back to back. I haven't seen 6 yet, but it's on my list.

This crazy lo-fi scifi film combines elements from The Terminator, Blade Runner, Timecop and Mad About You to form a classic piece of filmmaking that has spawned a slew of sequels. Thomerson is Jack Deth... literally. The role was made for him and Charles Band takes full advantage of it. Hindered somewhat from lack of budget, the "concept" behind the film manages to carry it through where the actual script fails making it one of the top scifi films imo (if we're talking top 200+). How do you make a science fiction film on a limited budget? Time travel to the past (present?). The Terminator franchise knew this very well and Banduses it to stretch his dollar here. This film is very enjoyable as long as you don't mind simple, quickly put together, low budget films that clearly look and feel like corners were cut.

Charles Band's best film as a director, though that's a rather low bar when your filmography includes such titles as "Dollman vs. Demonic Toys" and "Evil Bong: High 5." A majority of the film's success has to go to the film's writers, Danny Bilson and Paul De Meo, who wrote the very underrated film version of "The Rocketeer," and credit also to the film's two leads, the excellent Tim Thomerson and a before-she-was-famous Helen Hunt. The story here follows a cop from the future, Jack Deth, who's hot on the trail of a master criminal, Whistler, who has psychic abilities to put others under his control (trance). Deth is sent back in time to stop Whislter who's time traveled to modern day (well, 1980s) Los Angeles. Deth hunts him down with the help of plucky party girl, Hunt, the two of which who make a very charming couple. The script is far better than most Band productions, the special effects hold up, and the lead actors are terrific. It's hard to go wrong with this film.

This film is amazingly good bad. I remember thinking how amazing Trooper Deth was when I was a kid. And to see him and Helen Hunt kill zombies was awesome! Now, it's just hysterical! Great kick-off to one of the weirdest sci-fi series of all time.
