The Limits of Control (2009)

A mysterious stranger works outside the law and keeps his objectives hidden, trusting no one. While his demeanor is paradoxically focused and dreamlike all at once, he embarks on a journey that not only takes him across Spain, but also through his own consciousness.

yeah I loved it for a lot of reasons; it made me sleepy, it woke me up, it made me crave a double espresso in two separate cups. Aces.

Cinema as meditation, with a firm emphasis on the dreamy clarity of the journey rather than the destination. In other words, forget the non-existent plot, and enjoy Christopher Doyle's crystalline photography, the droning Boris score, De Bankolé's great stone face, and a string of incongruous star cameos (Swinton's being the best).

Wow, I am impressed by Jim Jarmusch, this is the first of his movies I have seen and it was refreshingly different. I especially enjoyed the visual richness present in this film-style, and Spain is an interesting subject to me personally so thats why the 5 stars. Check this movie out.

Jarmusch stripped and shaved. Beautiful colours.

If you watch Jarmusch's films of the last couple of years you will notice a very specific storytelling structure that is undoubtedly his own and Limits of Control is yet another example. It's slow moving, but rarely uninteresting. It follows one character extensively and designates all other performances as merely significant cameos. There is a wealth of visual and textual motifs running throughout. It's highly symbolic. The dialogue is sparse and is mostly used to express a metaphor or prophecy. And the conclusion is not a surprise, but still a satisfying end to the journey. I really liked this film.
