Tiger Bay (1959)

In Tiger Bay, the docklands of Cardiff, rough-and-tumble street urchin Gillie witnesses the brutal killing of a young woman at the hands of visiting Polish sailor Korchinsky. Instead of reporting the crime to the authorities, Gillie merely pockets a prize for herself — Korchinsky's shiny black revolver — and flees the scene. When Detective Graham discovers that Gillie has the murder weapon, the fiery young girl weaves a web of lies to throw him off course.

Amazing performance by young Haley Mills in this completely unpredictable drama. Horst Buchholz is stunningly gorgeous! Don't miss this excellent oldie!

Lee-Thompson's direction, less happy in the early scenes of murder and first encounter, is otherwise craftsmanlike, with a good use of locations and above all a firm feeling for outcasts and foreigners, their solidity and their background.

J.Lee Thompson's sumptuously romantic look at childhood, seen in part through the eyes of a seven year old Gillie Evans (Hayley Mills) and played to perfection with a good line-up of British actors from the 50's (including Hayley's father Sir John Mills, Meg Jenkins and Yvonne Mitchell). The story revolves around the witnessing of a murder in the Cardiff docklands. The haunting images are given their maximal effect through a Kaleidoscope of black and white cinematography. Highly Recommended.
