Tiger Bay (1959)

In Tiger Bay, the docklands of Cardiff, rough-and-tumble street urchin Gillie witnesses the brutal killing of a young woman at the hands of visiting Polish sailor Korchinsky. Instead of reporting the crime to the authorities, Gillie merely pockets a prize for herself — Korchinsky's shiny black revolver — and flees the scene. When Detective Graham discovers that Gillie has the murder weapon, the fiery young girl weaves a web of lies to throw him off course.

The best Hayley Mills film, no comparison. She always was better at playing tomboys. Horst Buchholz (Magnificent Seven) is tragic, charming and utterly gorgeous all at the same time. For those who fell for the Hollywood bad boy rebels such as James Dean, Marlon Brando and Steve McQueen should watch this film. I love how John Mills (Hayley's dad) seems to be in awe of his daughter in some scenes. This is an utterly utterly utterly brilliant film.

Good value for its four stars. The Cardiff in which this is set is long since gone, but that doesn't take away from this cinematic gem. Interesting this is one of the first films that depicted a multi-racial Britain. The star of this film though is clearly Hayley Mills. Provokkes thought in the question of the innocencence of childhood against its ammorality. Very interesting- and actually very topical in the current climate, despite being set nearly 50 years ago.

Lee-Thompson's direction, less happy in the early scenes of murder and first encounter, is otherwise craftsmanlike, with a good use of locations and above all a firm feeling for outcasts and foreigners, their solidity and their background.
