In 1960s Tokyo, Gonda owns a bar in which the gay, cross-dresser, and trans scenes meet. Gonda is in a relationship with the madam of the bar, Leda. As the younger Eddie starts a passionate affair with Gonda, she ignites the jealousy of Leda, unaware of another kind of history between them.

Rich and rewarding, Matsumoto's masterpiece expose of the Tokyo underworld.

An AMAZING film. I hope that it gets released in the US at some point. Same with Matsumoto's other films. _Shura_ is also amazing.

Matsumoto draws from Oedipus Rex to bring forth a surrealistic/postmodernist? portrait of 60s japan. Digs into the underground of gayclubs, school dropouts, student protests... Very valuable is the footage fetaturing then dada public display collective- zero dimension.

heavily stylized in the way I like it. I'd normally say something trite like "came for the style, stayed for the social critique," but Matsumoto goes beyond such simple distinctions and ought to be recognized for this visionary feat alone.
