Richard Harris in his prime. Wow, he's good. Very moving drama revolving around the world of British Rugby. Did I mention Richard Harris is good?

The most important thing that can be said about 'This Sporting Life' is just how very intense it is, and most of this is down to the acting of Richard Harris. I have to admit, I have little experience of seeing films starring Harris other than as Albus Dumbledore, but I definitely want to see more now. He steals the screen in a performance that will have you peeling the layers off of the onion, to use an analogy. A dark, disturbing and encapsulating watch that will have you wondering where the 2+ hours went. Incredible.

Seems derivitive now, but that's becasue it's been derived from so often. Could have been shorter and tighter.

Intensely powerful film, with lead performance to match. Very bleak and realistic, unusual for the cinema in 1963. Brutal at times. Richard Harris and Rachel Roberts are tremendous and deserved their Oscar nominations. Good black and white photography.

The brutality of Harris brings to mind Brando in Streetcar. He is all brute force and aggression who uses rugby sometimes unsuccessfully as the conduit through which negative emotions go, It is when another outlet is needed that the film becomes stark.
