Set against the backdrop of a beautiful garden in the heart of London, this contemporary fairy tale revolves around the unlikely friendship between a reclusive young woman and a cantankerous old widower. Bella Brown is a beautifully quirky young woman who dreams of writing and illustrating a successful children's book. After she is forced by her landlord to deal with her neglected garden or face eviction, she meets her match, nemesis, and unlikely mentor in Alfie Stephenson, a grumpy, loveless, old man who lives next door who happens to be an amazing horticulturalist.

At the start it seems like this movie might have some original characters, but soon when watching, it is obvious that most are just tired out clichés. The quirky but beautiful young girl, who meets the quirky but handsome young guy, and of course, the old grouch living next door who grows to have a soft spot in his heart for the young girl. This film seems like it may lead in a fresh new direction, but the only character who was remotely original was the quirky, yet charming, witty, and cheeky chef (played by Andrew Scott) who was not nearly given as much screen time or character development as his role deserved.

This Beautiful Fantastic is not meant to be realistic. It's supposed to be a fairy tale. That's fine, but it's a very low-stakes fairy tale, wrapped in a strained garden metaphor.

Matilda meets Amelie. Beautiful film portraying the life of a young girl growing up rather lonely but finding a lovely group of people to lead her way to happiness.

Finlay reminds one of a young Winona Ryder as she winsomely juggles learning to garden with letting her guard down, while the always watchable Andrew Scott once again proves to be a scene-stealer with his kindly cook.
