Thieves' Highway (1949)

Nick Garcos comes back from his tour of duty in World War II planning to settle down with his girlfriend, Polly Faber. He learns, however, that his father was recently beaten and burglarized by mob-connected trucker Mike Figlia, and Nick resolves to get even. He partners with prostitute Rica, and together they go after Mike, all the while getting pulled further into the local crime underworld.

The thing about noirs is, they've got the most accurate view of human nature. . . Misogynistic, pro-whore message in this one a plus.

Excellent noirish drama masterfully crafted by director Jules Dassin takes a look at a world not often seen in movies - the ruthless, cutthroat lives of long-haul truckers. Smart writing and fascinating characters fleshed out by superb performances. Intense, engrossing, and authentic, this is really a remarkable film.

Another Dassin noir/realist classic that deals with serveral layers of contemporaneous American society, from returning GIs disillusioned with what has happened during their absence, immigrant families trying to make a living in the face of corrupt businessmen, different generations, truck drivers, grifters, the middle class and prostitutes. Dassin's cross-section is placed in a film with great perfromances from Conte and Cortese, whose performance verges on erotic, decent supporting cast, great script from Bezzerides and there are enough thrills and twists to keep anyone happy, all told with an underlying sense of humour that humanises the whole thing.
