i really enjoyed this movie, we watched in back in the day in 225 and it really captivated me... which doesnt happen often.

One of the best films about love, lush and intriguein an unusal setting. (Name another film set in Indonesia. Any? No there aren't.) Great film making.

This movie just missed the mark from being great. Clearly, Guy Hamilton (Mel Gibson) must decide where his loyalties lie: with either his lover, Jill Bryant (Sigourney Weaver) or his career, but the film really doesn't capture the emotions behind this choice. Everything comes together, but it needed more punch. The difficulties of the people in Indonesia at this point in time could have been better portrayed.

One of Peter Weir's early successes finds a young Mel Gibson in good form in 1960s Indonesia during a time of political upheaval. This is vintage Weir, transporting the viewer to another time and place and examining it with an objective eye. Sigourney Weaver is miscast, but Linda Hunt is excellent as the diminutive Billy Kwan. A very good film that examines a society and an ambitious man's relentless drive at the expense of those he cares about.

Really nicely pieced together and the tension and atmosphere of the piece is its huge strength. Weir is a hugely talented director and he was on great form here in the run up to his career best - Witness.
