1987, love in time of war: bus driver George meets Carla, a Nicaraguan exile living a precarious, profoundly-sad life in Glasgow. Following a similar footprint to Land And Freedom, this time adding more of a human connection than a political agenda. Carlyle and Cabezas (unbelievably her only film credit) are brilliant, so commited and passionate in their performances. Everything a typical Loach film is; a studied script, excellent technicals, true performances and emotionally and politically engaging.

Delightfully Loach-esque, with the added bonus of being probably the best film to start off on Ken Loach if you don't really know his work.
