The relentless, inescapable, literal saltiness of this strikingly beautiful environment may have been director Mohammad Rasoulof's inspiration: Perhaps he is suggesting here that not even an army of boatmen could collect all of Iran's tears.

A strange fable, set in one of the most bizarre landscapes of Iran. It is paced but delivers a sense of unease at the end. You'd want to know what's the philosophy behind the folklore. If it is a stab at religion or perhaps just how a mythical belief can render a society solid, brutal and intolerant.

Stark Iranian landscapes make for a meditatively beautiful odyssey of idiosyncrasies. I wonder whether these odd encounters would seem as off-kilter if I weren't a foreigner looking in or if they seem like people on the fringe to an Iranian viewer as well.
