Beautiful images...worth watching for Merchant and Ivory fans...story is a bit weak

James Ivory has cast Britain's acting aristocracy to play post-Revolution Russian aristocracy, which brings much gravitas and many subtle performance highs to this drawn out story set in 1936/7 Shanghai.

Well tbh even tho my grandfather was in it (john wood) i found the movie exceedingly dull :(:(:(, he didn't even watch it because he was told his part was cut out. and i didn't think that ralph fiennes portrayed his character very well.

wow well what can i say , great cast , great story . this is one those movies that just dont get recognized for its greatness . wonderful connection and performance between richardson and fiennes .

Great relationship between Fiennes & Richardson we fantastically romantic... Great feel good movie... Good portrayal of family betrayal & friendships... Good demonstration of immigrants starting over from the bottom in their new country...
