This film, though set in the chaos and fear of the Japanese attacks on Shanghai, is principally about two very different people, both lost and prisoners of their circumstances. Richardson is stellar in portraying the Russian Countess Sofia, playing her with subtlety and vulnerability despite the incredible strength that the character possesses in supporting her family of five by selling herself in night clubs. Richardson is the true star of the film, though Fiennes is her perfect counterpart. The slow change in body language that Fiennes' character goes through is a window into his soul, and is remarkable to watch. Definitely worth your time, again, especially for Natasha Richardson that fills the screen with her performance for the entire movie.

Impressive acting performances from Ralph Fiennes and Natasha Richardson in a tragic tale of 1936 Shanghai. Plenty of street scenes presents a fairly realistic feeling of being in the city, and wonderfully portrays the mood in an unrestful world - where destiny is mercy to geopolitical events. The storyline itself is tragic and interesting, although not particularly original. The handful scenes of Fiennes and Hiroyuki Sanada as Mr. Matsuda are truly the best feature of the film. Razor sharp dialogue and wonderful acting, these scenes spark and is alone a reason to see this movie. Also worth mentioning is Allan Corduner playing another supporting role that deserved further exploration.

While not perfect I was won over by the performances of Fiennes and Richardson. I cared and rooted for their characters, hence a thumbs up.

a very historical film yet at the msame time it does paint a rosy picture. I guess it is kind of like casablanca. Too bad it doesn't have that humor and subtleness. I really admire how the story of displacement particularly how politics, romance and intrigue can exist in such a place like 30s Shanghai. It's kind of magical yet at the same time dire. I would suggest this film as a supplemnt to a modern Chinese history class. It helps frame the bigger picture.

A beutiful film with amazing set pieces, the stroty is slow to develop, but Ralph Fiennes keeps the story going, annoying the links to his past but necessary, Richardson is eye candy and delivers a mediocre acting, nice piece of history
