Its sumptuous, stately pace will wither the patience of countless moviegoers, but the impressively acted and gorgeously exotic The White Countess improves the longer you mull its complexities.

I don't know how I missed this one when it came out. I love almost all Merchant Ivory movies. I think the poster/DVD cover is very misleading. There isn't much romantic "action" in this one. Both Fiennes and Richardson are fantastic. Great movie! I recommend it if you love period movies and can tolerate a slow moving plot.

James Ivory has cast Britain's acting aristocracy to play post-Revolution Russian aristocracy, which brings much gravitas and many subtle performance highs to this drawn out story set in 1936/7 Shanghai.

I think this movie is vastly underrated. It is a beautiful picture with good story and remarkable acting.
