30 minutes into this movie I hated it, but it somehow got better and it wasn't too bad by the end. I don't think I could ever watch it again, though. I couldn't care less about the modern story, but the 1873 story was interesting and well acted.

The jarring jumps between disconnected stories and watered-down sensationalism make for a soggy experience.

When a movie gets itself over certain hurdles, establishing believably, mainly, and creating audience sympathy with/for one or more characters-- I am willing to silence my nagging inner critic, who is perhaps a thwarted pleasure principle raising its head to be fed. Sarah Polley makes this film. Her acting was excellent, but I found myself, at first, most delighted by her "Norwegian" accent. As the movie went on, I got addicted to that accent, which for me had become integral to her performance. She, not Hurley, not Penn, was the centerpiece of this movie.

I saw this because I was a huge Kathryn Bigelow fan. I was a bit disappointed.

Elegantly crafted but emotionally cold, a puzzle whose intricate construction one can admire but is difficult to connect with on any deeper level.
