The Violent Men (1955)

A former Union Army officer plans to sell out to Anchor Ranch and move east with his fiancée, but the low price offered by Anchor's crippled owner and the outfit's bullying tactics make him reconsider. When one of his hands is murdered he decides to stay and fight, utilizing his war experience. Not all is well at Anchor with the owner's wife carrying on with his brother who also has a Mexican woman in town.

Lurid way over the top western with Barbara oozing malevolence.

It's a very typical Western, that of a greedy and rich ranch owner (E.G. Robinson?!?) trying to force out all the fence building little guys. The twist is that his wife (Babs Stanwyck, naturally) is really behind all the devious machinations. Glenn Ford is simply the John Wyck of this film, the little guy who's dog they killed, little knowing what hell would come next. It'll do.

151228: Between the vindictive, self-serving, backstabbing Martha Wilkinson (Barbara Stanwyck) and the ultimatum wielding Caroline Vail, the women in this film got me riled. I was sucked right in by this duo and further by John Parish's (Glenn Ford) apparent unwillingness to invest in protecting his employees, friends and community. And that was all before the film was half over. I was so annoyed I was almost going to it off but then things started to go the way this old western fan wanted, and was conditioned to expect. Martha's true black-hearted nature was revealed, Parish turned out to be as coy as I had hoped and it wasn't over yet. Corruption and vigilante justice was to follow. Moviegoers must have reviled Stanwyck for years afterwards? Credit to such an old western for playing me so well. It's been awhile since I felt this passionate about a story. To top it off, there is an impressive stampede scene near the end as well as a realistic Wild Bill Hickok, Davis Tutt showdown. This film has it all and is now one of my favorites.

i'm so glad i watched violent men today instead of a john ford western that was also on. violent men is action packed throughout and all the baddies get their comeupance. although you couldn't ever call it a classic or amazing you can call it solid. it's the prime example of what every western should be. scintillating! who played the mother? the nasty cow? was that barbara stanwyck or was it dianne foster? somebody feel free to tell me
