The Umbrellas of Cherbourg (1964)

This simple romantic tragedy begins in 1957. Guy Foucher, a 20-year-old French auto mechanic, has fallen in love with 17-year-old Geneviève Emery, an employee in her widowed mother's chic but financially embattled umbrella shop. On the evening before Guy is to leave for a two-year tour of combat in Algeria, he and Geneviève make love. She becomes pregnant and must choose between waiting for Guy's return or accepting an offer of marriage from a wealthy diamond merchant.

This movie sucks you in. Every word is sung. In French. It is so endearing. I highly recommend it.

The music! The colors! Deneuve! And when that music swells into "I Will Wait For You" before he leaves to fight in Algeria, I become a sobbing mess. I never tire of this completely sung-through musical.

Simply my fave film of all time-Catherine Deneuve is the only woman I would ever give it up for then now and always-the final scene will leave you gasping..

This is a great film. The final scene is so sad though, but you realize why they can't be together.
