Not a bad take on the story despite the only visual change that took place in the character was a loss of his beard. Then he became primitive and carnal, something that was more believable than the crazy "hulk" forms that other movies portray. Perhaps this is more like the book, I just need to get around to reading it. They also had some fascinating characters and scenes in lee, his wife, the many tramps Hyde chased, the snake dancing and the "moulin rouge" dancing they filmed. These and other scenes must have been racy for the day. The film on the whole was rather melodramatic and the whole beard thing and voice change was distracting. I would classify it as campy.

As with all Hamer flicks, this was an interesting interpretation. The thing that bothered me about it was that I think it borrowed a bit too heavily from "Portrait of Dorian Gray" for it's examination of Hyde. It was definitely against type to portray Hyde as the suave, sophisticated villian, but it's been done and better. I liked that we weren't subjected to a 60s version of the transformation. It's unecessary, and in this case would really have taken away from the shock value. Lastly, it was odd to see Christopher Lee as anything other than the bad guy/ monster. LOL

The Two Faces of Dr. Jekyll is as silly and nasty a piece as Hammer and Terence Fisher have turned out which is saying something.

Jekyll's tragedy in this unique Stevenson revamp is that he doesn't understand that much of humanity already lives a Jekyll-and-Hyde existence -- including his unfaithful bride, who is a 'perfect wife' by day and a 'perfect mistress' by night.
