The Truth Commissioner (2016)

Set in a post-Troubles Northern Ireland, The Truth Commissioner follows the fictional story of Henry Stanfield, played by Roger Allam, a career diplomat who has just been appointed as Truth Commissioner to Northern Ireland. Eager to make good as a peacemaker, the Prime Minister urges a commission following the South African model of Truth and Reconciliation. But, though Stanfield starts bravely, he quickly uncovers some bloody and inconvenient truths about those now running the country; truths which none of those in power are prepared to have revealed.

The Truth Commissioner is a taut, engaging drama in the style of those Sunday night BBC or ITV dramas that tell a story decently, but do not leave you clamouring for more.

Telling drama about secrets and lies in Northern Ireland, which is perhaps appreciated more if you know a little about the history of the troubles there as a lot of the main characters are clearly based on known members of former paramilitary forces and current politicians there.

I like Roger Allam very much, but the dialogue and direction in this production was poor. The subject is of course very uncomfortable, and we could definitely see the analogies. The Swedish-drama-stylie background music didn't help at all.

The writing is very solid and well crafted, and the finished product, while not being perfect, is well worth a watch.
