Longtime Companion (1989)

During the summer of 1981, a group of friends in New York are completely unprepared for the onslaught of AIDS. What starts as a rumor about a mysterious "gay cancer" soon turns into a major crisis as, one by one, some of the friends begin to fall ill, leaving the others to panic about who will be next. As death takes its toll, the lives of these friends are forever redefined by an unconditional display of love, hope and courage.

Its surprising. It was made before Philadelphia, focuses on characters that are almost entirely gay men, it covers the entirety of the 1980s, offers a very honest portrait of the AIDS crisis, is a better movie, but Philadelphia is heralded as the definitive film about this subject. This film may move a little too fast but it isn't cheesy or award hungry like Philadelphia. It has a great cast and its well made. Deserves way more attention than it gets.

Important to place within context, i.e., released in 1990, one of the first to deal with the AIDS crisis. A little clumsy in places, but overall well done and worth watching. Philadelphia (which came later) was clearly much more polished; this has a more real and gritty feel. Deserves more attention.

One the first really realistic films on the theme AIDS. Hearthbreaking, utterly sad and yet full of hope - the ending of the film - made me holler in the theatre

(Watched Sat 16 Jun 2012) I can imagine this was groundbreaking in its time in its determination to break all kinds of stereotypes; it's still a moving work, with strong yet understated performances all round.
