The Theatre Bizarre (2011)

Down a seedy city street in her neighborhood, young Enola Penny is obsessed with what appears to be a long abandoned theatre. One night, she sees that the front door is slightly ajar and impulsively decides to sneak inside. But there in the dark, decrepit auditorium, a show unlike any other unfolds before her eyes. Its host is an eerie human puppet named Peg Poett who will introduce Penny to six tales of the bizarre: A couple traveling in a remote part of the French Pyrenees cross paths with a lustful witch; A paranoid lover faces the wrath of a partner who has been pushed to her limit; The Freudian dreams of an unfaithful husband blur the lines between fantasy and reality; The horrors of the real world are interpreted through the mind of a child; A woman addicted to other people's memories gets her fix through the vitreous fluid of her victims' eyeballs; And a perverse obsession with sweets turns sour for a couple in too deep.

Short vignettes with a nice twist, some Tales from the Crypt Some Twilight Zone... But still with an original execution. In today's faded carbon copies of every other film, this movie has given new air to the horror/monster genre. To all involved in this movie, thank you!

This anthology film combines 6 short stories and one framing segment into a trip down the tropes of the Grand Guignol. Not quite like other anthology films, this picture tends to go the route of the more grotesque, dirty, gory, disgusting and sexy than most other films of it's type. While the segments don't necessarily relate to each other, the framing segment starring Udo Kier is a brilliant way to bring them all together. You don't have to look too hard to find the messages in these shorts, but you might not be able to keep your eyes on the screen long enough to see them.

It's definitely a "wow that was so much better than I expected" type of film. While anthology movies are mainly hit and miss, this movie is mainly a hit with being exactly what you would expect from an indie art-house horror film. "I Love You" is a generic drama short with a pretty substantial plot twist and well done ending. "The Accident" is a tear-jerking look at life and death that is done very intricately. "Vision Stains" is a brutal and disturbing sci-fi tale, "Sweets" is a disgustingly delightful look at food fetishes, "Wet Dreams" is a Lovecraftian penis chopping Tom Savini tale, and the one about the toad was probably the weakest and I can't even remember the name of it. Overall, it's a great film if you know what you're getting yourself into.

Some of the clips are so poorly done that you can't help but laugh through the whole thing. Some are extremely well done particularly the last two including a woman who kills homeless people and sticks a needle in their eye then injects it in her own to see everything they saw. The last one about a strange sweet addiction was odd but intriguing. The first couple are miserable but hilarious. Overall I enjoyed my stay by I don't think ill he'd back anytime soon.
