The Taqwacores (2010)

Yusef, a first-generation Pakistani engineering student, moves off-campus with a group of Muslim punks in Buffalo, New York. His new "un-orthodox" housemates soon introduce him to Taqwacore: a hardcore, Muslim punk-rock scene that only exists out west. As the seasons change, Taqwacore influences the house more and more. The living room becomes a mosque during the day, while it continues to host punk parties at night. Ultimately, Yusef is influenced by Taqwacore too, as he begins to challenge his own faith and ideologies. 'The Taqwacores' deals with the complexities of being young and Muslim in modern-day America.

Extremely crude in its technical elements, the low-budget film does reveal stylistic ambitions through devices like frequently reverting from color to black-and-white film stock. But the shaky narrative style and broad characterizations undo its effectiveness.

The Taqwacores, based on the fantastic novel of the same name by author Michael Muhammad Knight, has only one flaw: it's very streamlined, and may confuse audiences that aren't familiar with the novel. And that's it. Apart from that one tiny little flaw, the Taqwacores manages to be every bit as emotionally deep and thought provoking as the book. It's well acted, directed and Muhammad Knight has written a screenplay that translates well on screen. This is one of my new, very favorite films.

Saw this at The Scottsdale International Film Fest in Oct 2010. While it is based on a novel, it borrows heavily from other films. There is great depth of character development, but the movie is ultimately slowed by the pacing of the story.
