Katzelmacher (1969)

A group of young slackers spend most of their time hanging out in front of a Munich apartment building. When a Greek immigrant named Jorgos moves in, however, their aimless lives are shaken up. Soon, new tensions arise both within the group and with Jorgos.

Interesting, depressed film about a group of Germans in a flat complex who take out theirhopeless lives and bired interaction with each other out on a foriegn worker. Takes patience but is worth the effort, in showing how lack of options can become lethal.

I'm guessing that one has to know quite a bit of German sentimentality of that time period to watch this film and actually enjoy it. I, on the other hand, am oblivious and obviously dull when it comes to such things, so I pretty much fell asleep. :)

Fassbinder's minimalistic commentary on xenophobia, among other things, is interesting, but this film isn't for anyone, for its bleakness and methodical pacing will put off.
