The duel between Randolph Scott, the hero, and Richard Boone, the bad guy, is made all the more enjoyable by Boone's grudging respect for the man he knows is his most lethal adversary. This is another example of Randolph Scott and Budd Boetticher at the pinnacle of their respective careers.

Should be required viewing for every dumbass 17 year old who thinks Sergio Leone invented the 'adult' or revisionist western. Budd Boetticher took a brilliant new approach to the genre by pushing it's simplicity to the point of being abstract. In these films as Boetticher said the 'the heroes and villains are practically interchangeable'. The fact that the film's abstract view takes place in a little more than a 24 period is what makes the film truly stand out.

While the first 20 minutes are a slow go, once the story picks up this is a taught, tense, and intelligent western. Randolph Scott is great as the cunning but flawed hero Pat Brennan, but the real stand-out is Richard Boone's laid back performance as the ambiguous "villain" Frank Usher. Unfortunately, the only female character is turned into a sex object, as one might expect of old-school westerns, but that doesn't undermine the effectiveness of the storytelling. Charles Lawton's gorgeous wide-screen photography evokes confinement and constraint amidst the wide-open scenery of the old west.

A great film. Probably the best of the Randolph Scott-Budd Boetticher collaborations, one of the great actor-director teams of all time.
