A not-very-good comedy trying to be philosophical. Very dated as well. Luv Peter always.

Richard Rush's mobius strip of a film gives O'Toole one of his greatest roles as the mephistophelean director Eli Cross, who may or may not be making a WW1 film in which escaped con Railsback is the replacement stuntman destined to suffer the same (deadly) fate as his predecessor. A true "cult" film, in that it's utterly unclassifiable--alternately comedic, suspenseful, and just plain enigmatically bizarre for its own sake--imagine "The Bad And The Beautiful" as conceived by Alejandro Jodorowsky. As a veteran of a few film sets, I can say that as an expose of the moviemaking process, it's more accurate than most would care to admit...

I thought this was a great movie. O'toole's performance was fantastic. The story is one that only a filmmaker could truly like, but as long as you pay attention it's not as confusing as it seems.

A Great film within a film and a must-see for anyone wanting an education in the process of filmmaking. Peter O'Toole is the perfect director, yet wonderfully over-the-top. Steve Railsback gives a great performance as Cameron, and even Barabra Hershey stayed off the drugs long enough to give an endearing performance. Not to be missed is the Limited Edition version IF you can find it.
