Interesting plot, always good performance from Peter O Toole, Steve Railsback is good, but he always reminds of his role as Charles Manson in the TV movie Helter Skelter. Overall good film, not great, has a cult following

I saw this when I was a kid and haven't seen it in about 25 years. I just remember Peter O-Toole shouting 'F*Cking F*CK OFF YOU C*N*T*** F*CKing B*S**** F**K!' So that's a 3/5

Schlocky muzak soundtrack, extraordinary scenery chewing by Peter O'Toole, wooden lead acting by Steve Railsback...none of that matters as this thing twists and turns its way into an exhilarating examination of reality, the psyche and all the rest of that nonsense.

What starts out as a schlock fest of 70's tv camera tricks, quickly turns into one of the most fascinating behind the scenes look of an action film, and the inevitable drama that unfolds in front of and around the camera. Peter O'Toole is Magnificent as always, this time as the Ego Maniacle director.

Illusion, morality and paranoia -- Richard Rush writes and directs not only a great story about such dangerous subjects, but continuously plays the audience in the same way he shows the protagonist being played, prompting us to question what should be real, proper and/or suspicious. The depth of metaphor and polemics in this film may only be fully answered by watching Rush's brilliant "The Sinister Saga of Making 'The Stunt Man.'" O'Toole is riveting as both the character in the movie, and in his recounting of the making of the movie in 'Sinister Saga.'
