The People vs. George Lucas (2010)

The passion the original Star Wars trilogy inspires in its fans is unparalleled; but when it comes to George Lucas himself, many have found their ardor has cooled into a complicated love-hate relationship. This hilarious, heartfelt documentary delves deep into Lucas's cultural legacy, asking all the tough questions. Has Lucas betrayed his masterwork? Should he just have left the original trilogy alone? Is The Phantom Menace so bad it should carry a health warning? Utilizing interviews taken from over 600 hours of footage, and peppered with extraordinary Star Wars and Indiana Jones recreations lovingly immortalized in song, needlepoint, Lego, claymation, puppets and paper-mâché, above all this film asks the question: who truly owns that galaxy far, far away—the man who created it, or the fans who worship it?

If you have any love for the original star wars trilogy you will absolutely love this movie. I appreciated not only the humor (which starts about 25 minutes into the movie) but also some of the deeper explanations of particular arguments. For instance, I always believed the "who shot first" argument was just nerdy knit picking. After watching this movie however I now understand the argument's deeper levels. I'll leave it to you to watch and understand what I am talking about on that. Anyways, I never really blog or internet whine so many of these complaints I thought I privately buried deep within me. So, it was great to see a whole fan base that felt my pain. The only reason this did not get a 90-100% from me is because they left out two huge new saga flaws: - the dialogue - AND HAYDEN FUCKING GARBAGE PILE CHRISTIANSON! (how you not mention that steaming pile of cat shit acting when discussing star wars episode 2+3 flaws is beyond me)

An interesting expose on fans and their role in art. From a Star Wars/Indiana Jones fanboy, this was worth the time.

Pretty fascinating documentary about the history of George Lucas' beloved epic and how fans (including myself) believe he has done everything in his power to violate and degrade his wondrous creation with re-editing and awful successive movies years later. The film is really fascinating and does a strong job of highlighting what exactly the flaws inherent in Lucas's decisions are. It also outlines the hypocrisy of Lucas, a director who railed against the colorization of black and white films because he felt that tampering with older films was a mortal cinematic sin and then became the poster child for the very same act. The film was sold as a debate on whether Lucas insulted the fans with his actions and people who defend his actions and still love the changes. Ultimately that is not the film that is shown. Instead is a scathing attack for the most part on Lucas' errors. However, I am fine with that though, since Lucas is deserving of the animosity without a doubt. If you are a Star Wars fan who feels somewhat betrayed, its definitely worth a watch.

A really funny look at the rise of George Lucas and how his fans worshipped him and then turned against him when they were disapointed with the 3 newer star wars movies. It is interesting to see the different opinions of the fans and also to see how much passsion they have for star wars. All inall it is an entertaining documentary!

I learned a lot of things about Star Wars and George Lucas that I didn't know. I also learned some people take Star Wars way too seriously.
