Huge departure for Zhang from his usual style, but he comes out on top. Gong Li proves she's one of the greatest living actresses again. The film has a realist take that works brilliantly.

A man gets kicked in the balls, and his wife goes through the legal system to get justice. I am not joking, that is the plot. Totally fucking rad, right? Right. The fact that this film, with a plot as absurd as that, actually has such a subtle and almost-serious tone to it makes it all the better. It is incredibly funny. The film can also be viewed as an investigation of the legal system in a reforming China, as well as the schism between rural and urban life in China. Recommended.

The plot seems expressly designed to placate the bureaucrats who banned Zhang's two previous films in China, but the quasi-documentary approach (involving scores of non-professional actors, hidden cameras and radio mikes) is brilliantly finessed.

An impoverished pregnant peasant woman seeks legal redress from her wealthy landlord after he injures her husband. She takes her case higher & higher, eventually reaching Beijing. A story about putting all of your energy into fighting for what you believe in, and makes you wonder if that is ever a healthy attitude.
