Quite possibly Fuller's best, and a great example of what B-movies were capable of back in the day. For starters, the turnaround time is amazing - it was shot over 10 days in October, about four months after the war began. Even more striking is its blunt but complex dissection of race relations in the U.S., treading further than any prestige picture would've dared. Decades later, it holds up well without ever seeming preachy. Spike Lee's upcoming picture works like a history lesson; arriving before the civil rights movement, this one means so much more.

Excellent war movie by B-Movie auteur Samuel Fuller. Made for $100,000 and shot on a 10-day schedule, the film exceeds the expectations of what can be done on so low a budget. Gene Evans as the sardonic Sergeant Zack is a revelation, and Fuller's direction and screenwriting is sympathetic and laced with social commentary advanced for the times. There are some moments where the acting from the supporting cast is uneven, and the fog scene is clearly shot on a soundstage but the final, frenzied battle scene outshines many films with larger budgets. While The Steel Helmet may not be the equal of Fuller's war masterpiece The Big Red One, in its own way The Steel Helmet has every right to be considered a classic.

A very gritty and raw war film that has more on its mind than just action. The acting is pretty solid, the setting is interesting and the questions it asks are important. While it's a little more old school and low budget than some of the best war films it still ranks as an essential film in the genre. Give this a watch if you like war films!

an independent movie classic, not to mention a damn good war picture. and war as it's seen through the perspectives of the group, the bad-ass, the outcasts, the little stragler South Korean kid, and one of the all-time BOOMing climaxes ever (with 25 extras! and a tank made out of plywood!!) Genius from the ingenius.

reasons why i can't give this flick a higher rating: 1. the 'koreans' in this are not korean actors so when they speak korean, it just sounds really awkward. you would think you could just overlook this as a korean-speaking korean but it detracts from the credibility of the characters and the movie itself seems less intelligent somehow. 2. the korean boy who sings the korean national anthem--that is not the korean national anthem. not sure what that's supposed to signify, intended or not. 3. these things aside, the outdoor sets were rather clumsily made, complete with fog machines. in 1951 you should've been able to come up with a more believable battle environment as a backdrop. 4. one of the best war films ever made? i don't think so. the plot was pretty weak and although it was not a total waste of time, it certainly isn't something i'll remember longterm.
