Actress Margaret Elliot is well past her prime but refuses to retire from the acting business. Despite entreaties from both her daughter, Gretchen, and one-time professional colleague Jim Johannsen, Margaret remains convinced that she can regain her former glory. As she sets her sights on a coveted Hollywood role, Johannsen tries doggedly to get his unrequited love to see the folly of her ways.

Bette Davis chews the scenery in this flim about a former Hollywood star who has fallen on hard times. Though clearly a role with which Davis could empathize, she manages to suck most of the emotion out of the story with her over-the-top, caricaturesque performance.

Bette Davis appeared in this film a year after making something of a comeback in "All About Eve" which is ironic since since this film is about a washed up actress clinging to her fame and desperately trying to get back into film. It's high melodrama for sure, but pretty fun for a few reasons. Davis supposedly felt the film was based on rival Joan Crawford, so she sprinkles the film with a few Crawford-isms. You also get Sterling Hayden on a sailboat, which is fun to see since this was a real-life passion of Hayden's. And best of all is a scene were a 40-something Davis does a screen test trying to act like a flirtatious 20 year old, but it's when she sits alone in a screening room and sees her performance that the film goes into high gear melodrama. It's not a very deep film, but it's pretty entertaining.

Not the best form Bette but she still added power and emotion. The story was OK but it should have used more of its tragic aspects to allow Bette to shine more.

Maybe less witty than All About Eve, but still a Davis tour-de-force! The scene where she takes a drunken ride with her Oscar is hysterical and pure Davis. The scricpt was written by two very close ex-friends of Joan Crawford and is reportedly based on her. All you have to do is watch Bette relishing sending her old nemesis up and that rumour becomes fact. Superb.

Campy movie from the legendary Bette Davis. She received an Academy Award nomination for work in this movie. Must have been slim pickins that year.
