The 5 stars is for Fellini's Toby Dammit (my favorite Fellini film, even though it is a short). The other 2 shorts are passable Hammer Horror style stuff.

Three Poe stories by three famous directors. The first two have the virtue of being short, though even they could have been edited to get to the shocker endings faster. The third is much too long and self-indulgent.

HISTOIRES EXTRAORDINAIRES/TRE PASSI NEL DELIRIO is a collection of three short movies by arthouse stalwarts Roger vadim, Louis Malle and Federico Fellini adapting E.A. Poe stories for the screen. Vadim's METZENGERSTEIN stars Jane & Peter Fonda, just in case you don't get the incestuous subtext (they play cousins in love with each other). Malle's "WILLIAM WILSON" stars Alain Delon & Brigitte Bardot, at the time the most handsome actors in French cinema (Brad & Angelina might learn a thing or two from them), and is a great doppelganger story shot in my hometown, so it holds a special place among my faves. Fellini's TOBY DAMMIT is one of the scariest, oneiric, atmospheric horror films that feels more like Mario Bava than Fellini (also because it reprises the spooky bouncing ball gimmick from OPERAZIONE PAURA). An absolute masterpiece.
