The Source Family (2013)

A feature documentary film set in Hollywood, examining a radical experiment in '70s utopian living. The Source Family were the darlings of the Sunset Strip until their communal living, outsider ideals and spiritual leader Father Yod's 13 wives became an issue with local authorities. They fled to Hawaii, leading to their dramatic demise.

Maria Demopoulos and Jodi Wille's evocative documentary The Source Family takes us inside the ultimate California commune, from the early days of bliss to the cult-like twists and ultimate dissolution of the dream.

Fascinating documentary about a cult centered around a restaurant (featured in a scene in Annie Hall!) in 1970s Los Angeles. One of the things that makes this movie so good is the extensive film, photo and audio archive preserved by the members of the Family and made available to the filmmakers so they could capture what it was like to be a part of this strange though in many ways loving, welcoming, group.

Bizarre and entertaining, The Source Family takes you on the journey of many of the members of this cult. At first you're fascinated by the enigmatic leader "Father Yod", and by the end you're disgusted and frightened by him. It doesn't totally justify its run time, and there are times I wondered if there was more to this story. But it will satisfy you on a weekday afternoon if you're home sick or something.

"Far fucking out." Fascinating documentary thanks to a lot of the footage provided by "Iris Aquarian," the Source archivist.

The latest addition to the booming library of docs archiving the Nixon-Nam era, this magnetic pop-history memorial has everything: free sex, celebrity, psychedelic rock, polygamy and beyond.
