There are moments of genius and profound insights when you scratch below the surface. It takes some work though.

Obviously an oddity as a Bergman film in that it is in English and set in Berlin. The film builds very slowly and meanders around for quite some time, which all contributes to a Kafkaesque or Orwellian feeling of dread and helplessness, by the en of the movie an over all nightmare phantasm is achieved, something quite different from Bergman's regular works indeed. There is a lot in this movie that interests me but i guess i would have to say over all that it doesn't really work that well as a whole...

It works on a very simplistic level with Carradine and Ullmann providing excellent performances as the troubled and volatile couple at the centre of a complex tale of political intrigue and German history. Sadly, it lacks any real depth and even descends into all-out insanity towards the end, with this melodramatic weakness, it sadly avoids making any substantial observations about anything important or long-lasting. Well directed and acted but lacking the substance usually so central to Bergman's work.
