Rare english language bergman film, its definitely my least favorite of any of the ones ive seen of his, it doesnt look or feel anything like a bergman film, ullman is solid as always, and its cool to see goldfinger pop up, but carradines character is such a unlikable asshole, i couldnt stand him, and it was confusing too, i couldnt tell what was going on sometimes, at the end, when everything is explained, it just seemed so random and not in touch with the rest of the film, even tho this is 1920s Berlin, theres a character that seems to be a 1970s black jive guy, idk what was going on, it started out decent, with potential, but just fell apart

It works on a very simplistic level with Carradine and Ullmann providing excellent performances as the troubled and volatile couple at the centre of a complex tale of political intrigue and German history. Sadly, it lacks any real depth and even descends into all-out insanity towards the end, with this melodramatic weakness, it sadly avoids making any substantial observations about anything important or long-lasting. Well directed and acted but lacking the substance usually so central to Bergman's work.

A very different kind of film from Ingmar Bergman, made in his exile from Sweden when he was falsely accused of tax evasion. He's given an abnormally big budget and does a period piece, a cautionary tale of 1923 Berlin. I really enjoyed the work of David Carradine, Liv Ullmann, Gert Frobe and James Whitmore, and it's worth seeing especially if you like works such as Fassbinder's Berlin Alexanderplatz or Fosse's Cabaret. Just don't go into it expecting a typical Bergmanesque film and you won't be disappointed.
