While there are no weak performances here, the cast is working in a vacuum of context. The Seagull, a movie about characters without a sense of purpose, suffers from the same problem.

While Chekhov cannot possibly be fully captured in a 2 hour movie, this latest Seagull adaptation makes good use of atmosphere and environment to bring to light the spirit of the original play -- even if the plot feels rushed and lacking at points.

It's a busy domestic drama that gives an audience plenty to think and feel about while enjoying Chekhov's gift for engaging dramatic dialogue.

As other reviewers have mentioned, there's better adaptations of this classic Anton Chekhov play, but with its all-star cast I did find enough drama here to keep me engaged throughout. Somehow, the characters here did not have a powerful effect on me, thus 3 stars is the highest I would rate it.
