Know zero about the play this is based on. One of the Pro reviewers here said they thought it was best if that was the case for viewers. Saw this one at a independent non-profit theater I frequent. Cool place that a lot of people hold dear. Perfect for The Seagull. At a megaplex with Sicario on one side and Solo on the other, not sure how this would do. good acting all around.

The Seagull is lush and dreamlike, leaving the drawing room for lake, field, and forest. Though we lose some of Chekhov’s claustrophobic talkiness, the dense poetry of his language, Mayer fully captures Chekhov’s sharp humor.

While Chekhov cannot possibly be fully captured in a 2 hour movie, this latest Seagull adaptation makes good use of atmosphere and environment to bring to light the spirit of the original play -- even if the plot feels rushed and lacking at points.

The Seagull is a charming, if not all that poignant, comedy of manners whose true strength lies in the myriad one-on-one interactions between the actors, precise and pitch-perfect all.

It's all very pretentious with a cast of fine actors spouting dialogue that sounds witty and meaningful - yet, more theatrical than real life.
