Great pirate adventure movie, one of my favorite Errol Flynn movies... it must of been one of the inspirations for the recently Pirates movies (The monkey!).

Another rousing swashbuckler from director Michael Curtiz and starring Errol Flynn. This time Flynn is a pirate captain working for Queen Elizabeth I, plundering Spanish ships and freeing the galley slaves that have been entrapped by the Inquisition. At his side is Alan Hale and others who may be familiar from earlier similar pictures. However, The Sea Hawk is a slight notch down from Captain Blood (1935) or especially Robin Hood (1938) because Brenda Marshall makes a duller love interest than Olivia de Havilland (Flynn's usual starring partner) and Henry Daniell is wicked but not quite as wicked as Basil Rathbone. Both of these stellar co-stars turned this picture down to seek different horizons. Claude Rains is here but with little to do. Still there is no denying the thrilling adventure scenes, often shot in the giant Maritime soundstage at Warner Brothers where giant sailing ships battle each other and men leap from one to the other cutlasses drawn. Erich Wolfgang Korngold's score undoubtedly adds to the effect.

A classic by all standards with the greatest of film pirates, Errol Flynn. The Korngold score is riveting, the story is great, and the supporting cast is great. When you need adventure, look no further than The Sea Hawk

One of the all-time great swashbuckler adventure pictures. The great Errol Flynn stars as Privateer Geoffry Thorpe, assigned by Queen Elizabeth (Flora Robson) to rob a Spanish fleet of gold in order to thwart a possible invasion of England (a very topical subject being that the film was released in 1940 while Germany was attacking England from the air). Though the picture shares a name with a novel by adventure novelist Rafael Sabatini (whose book Captain Blood served as inspiration for a previous hit Flynn/Curtiz adventure picture), that is all it has in common. But no matter. Both Flynn and director Michael Curtiz (this was the tenth out of twelve pictures they worked on together) are in their element with violent sea battles, exciting sword fights, and high romance, all set to a rousing Erich Wolfgang Korngold score.

Errol Flynn was never better in black & white in his best pirate teaming with director Micheal Curtiz. The production is top-notch with Fx that honestly still hold up as well as a production design that is marvelous to look at. This is especially so because of the great direction by Curtiz who adds some very kinetic camerawork for this time. Also the use of foreground objects in man y establishing shots lends the movie a near 3D quality. The switch to sepia once Flynn and crew movie to the New World is a bold and exciting choice and adds considerable excitement to the images onscreen. The final sword duel is shot with an amazing eye for shadow and using it to enhance the scene. The way in which both swordsmen shadows play against the vast wall of the map room is breathtaking. The cast is perfect, with Flynn at his most dashing and Claude Rains adding depth to a character who could have been very one-dimensional. This is one of the best pirate...nay, one of the best adventure movies filmed.
