The Scarlet Letter (1995)

Set in puritanical Boston in the mid 1600s, the story of seamstress Hester Prynne, who is outcast after she becomes pregnant by a respected reverend. She refuses to divulge the name of the father, is "convicted" of adultery and forced to wear a scarlet "A" until an Indian attack unites the Puritans and leads to a reevaluation of their laws and morals.

For hopeless romantics only! If you didn't like the book because you thought it was depressing, you might like this movie. It shouldn't even be called an adaptation. About the only things this movie has in common with the book are the characters names and the fact that they make her wear a scarlet letter. Everything else is different. I repeat, only for hopeless romantics.

This actually was a pretty good movie if I remember right. Its been a while since I have seen it, but I am a sorta fan of the novel so I will recommend it.

I think that perhaps people are judging it in comparison to the book. I have never read the book but I can see why it might have disappointed fans. Demi moore can't really carry the lead and some of the production is poor and feels rushed, but what a fucking story...really must read that book!

Great interpretation of Nathaniel Hawthorne's book "The Scarlet Letter", this movie turns out to be a relaxing, nostalgic and pleasant film to watch. Costumes, plot, dialogues, location, historic details were all amazing. The soundtrack is just great, it just gets you in the right mood to follow this gloomy love story, and stays with you from beginning to end. The message is there, and it's easy to read - a direct message that regards prejudices againts indians and women, but also the oldest discussion in the world: what's right, and what's wrong? Religion, mixed with politics, mixed with the difficulty of colonizing a new land, and then the past, which is always following us, even when we think it isn't. Simply a great movie.
